Movable Motives – Diminished Scale

This article will explore the use of movable motives in the diminished scale.  The motive we will explore first has a tritone on the top, then a M3 and a M2 or a P4 and a m2.  Since the diminished scale is symmetrical its motives break down into pairs.  I will call these first position and second position, rather arbitrarily.  Just orient yourself by the half-step or whole-step and you should find it rather intuitive.  The more diminished scale patterns you play, the more intuitive the whole scale and sound becomes.  Have a look at the following over a vamp of D7#9 or D13b9.
